Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

This Gastro Esophageal Reflux disease happens when food material or acid in the stomach gets a back flow in the esophagus. Since the material remains in the lower part of the esophagus, one gets heartburn. On occasion, the material from the stomach flows as far back to the mouth, causing burning sensation in  the throat. The patient or sufferer may even find undigested food in the reflux material.

Most of the people have the experience of minor acid reflux especially after heavy meals. It doesn’t matter if it happens very occasionally but once it becomes a regular problem one should not neglect it and take proper treatment before it becomes complicated.

GERD if left untreated, may develop into erosive esophagitis, esophageal stricture, and ulceration. All these may lead to esophageal cancer in due course The most serious complications of GERD is Barrett’s esophagus. It is a premalignant condition where the esophagus membrane cell gets changed to something similar to intestine lining which is considered to be body’s(esophagus) self protection from excessive exposure to acid. However, development of Barrett’s esophagus reduces heart burning  but increases the chances of esophageal cancer considerably.

Acid GERD may happen to any age group or sex . But, it will affect to people most who are obese or suffering from hiatal hernia, recurring vomiting or sceleroderma. For women, acid reflux syndrome will be more prevalent during pregnancy.
